The Canadian construction and infrastructure sector is undertaking structural transformation as artificial intelligence is progressively integrated across planning, design, and project delivery workflows. AI-enabled construction technologies are already demonstrating measurable value in scheduling optimisation, cost estimation, risk analysis, and project coordination; however, adoption remains uneven across the sector, with most firms still in pilot or limited-use phases and only a minority achieving multi-process integration. The global AI in construction market is projected to grow from approximately USD 5 –11 billion in 2025 to between USD 15 –24 billion by 2030, reflecting accelerating investment in intelligent infrastructure systems and data-driven construction capabilities.

 

In Toronto, AI-enabled technologies such as digital twins, Building Information Modelling (BIM) systems, and advanced data analytics platforms are increasingly being deployed across transit expansion, housing development, and urban redevelopment programmes. These tools are primarily implemented at project level to enhance planning accuracy, design coordination, and lifecycle performance visibility across complex infrastructure environments. This reflects a clear transition toward digital-first delivery models rather than fully standardised city-wide AI integration. The broader construction software ecosystem is projected to expand at approximately 9.7% over the 2025–2035 period, driven by cloud-based project management and data-centric construction operations.

 

Despite accelerating digital uptake, the sector continues to face structural constraints that are now intensifying the urgency for transformation. Labour shortages remain persistent across skilled trades, engineering, and technical disciplines, while fragmented data environments, legacy systems, and interoperability challenges continue to restrict end-to-end integration across project lifecycles. Industry analysis consistently indicates that most firms remain in early adoption phases, reflecting uneven digital maturity and widening performance divergence across the sector. These constraints are increasingly translating into cost pressures, delivery uncertainty, and reduced productivity in complex infrastructure programmes.
